Stefanos’s villa was a white marble pavilion-style building, set around a courtyard with a swimming pool and an outdoor entertaining area shaded by a pergola covered with fresh green grapevines. A hot pink bougainvillea grew across the whitewashed wall in startling contrast.

‘This is fabulous, Stefanos. What can I say?’ she said as they stood by the pool after Alex and Dell had dropped them off.

‘I can imagine you’ll be spending some time lying in the shade around the pool and relaxing,’ he said. ‘Or I hope you will.’

She looked up at him. ‘I’m not sick, you know. Just...hormonally incapacitated.’

He smiled. ‘I realise that—but tell me you don’t need a break.’

‘I do need a break. You’re right about that. And...and I’m grateful to you for bringing me to this heavenly place.’

Even though she wasn’t quite sure how she would be spending her time here—and knew that she needed to keep on her guard against him.

‘My mother used to say to my father and I that on vacation we needed to wind down from stress and relax to the point of boredom.’

She smiled. ‘I bet that didn’t last long.’

‘You’re right. My father wasn’t one for sitting around. He was energetic. We’d soon enough be sailing or hiking or skiing. Mama would more often than not come with us.’

‘Energetic like you used to be?’ she said. Then flushed as she remembered how very energetic they’d been together both back then and more recently. ‘Er...can we go inside?’

The two main bedroom suites were set on either side of the courtyard. Between was a central kitchen, expansive living and dining areas, and a further two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms at the back. They were for extra guests, or if he wanted to bring his own staff, Stefanos explained.

His own staff. Again, she was struck by the differences in their worlds.

‘Let me show you to your room,’ he said. ‘There are dark circles under your eyes.’

‘Stop right there,’ she said in mock command. ‘I appreciate your concern, but you’ve already told me I look dreadful once today. It’s not great for a girl’s ego.’

He smiled. ‘Even tired and nauseous you still look beautiful,’ he said.

‘That’s better,’ she said with a smile.

He might not mean it, but it sounded nice. She felt swept by an urge to hug him. Not with anything sexual in mind, but just because he was being kind. She hadn’t expected he would want to please her—after all they meant nothing to each other now.

But ten years ago, in those passionate few months when they’d been together, he’d been not only her lover but her best friend—her everything. She had never imagined she would feel that way for a boy. She had never allowed herself to wonder how it might have ended if it hadn’t been for that pregnancy scare and the awkward issues it had raised. That would have been far too painful. Although his ghosting had hurt, at the age of nineteen she had thought there would be other men like him—perhaps even better than him—in her future.
